Ophthalmic Antibiotic
(Chloramphenicol) 1% Sterile, Ophthalmic Ointment
Active Ingredient(s): Each gram contains: Chloramphenicol 10 mg, in a light mineral oil, white petrolatum, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate base.
Indications: Chloramphenicol veterinary ophthalmic ointment 1% is appropriate for use in dogs and cats for the topical treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by pathogens susceptible to chloramphenicol.
Pharmacology: Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic providing rapid clinical response and having therapeutic activity against susceptible strains of a number of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus hemolyticus.
Dosage and Administration: Application of the ointment should be preceded by cleansing to remove discharge and crusts. The ointment is applied every three (3) hours around the clock for 48 hours after which night instillations may be omitted. A small amount of ointment should be placed in the lower conjunctival sac. Treatment should be continued for two (2) days after the eye appears normal. Therapy for cats should not exceed seven (7) days.
Contraindication(s): Chloramphenicol products must not be used in meat, egg, or milk producing animals. The length of time that residues persist in milk or tissues has not been determined.
Precaution(s): Most susceptible bacteria will respond to chloramphenicol therapy in a few days. If improvement is not noted in this period of time, a change of therapy should be considered.
When infection is suspected as the cause of a disease process, especially in purulent or catarrhal conjunctivitis, attempts should be made to determine through susceptibility testing, which antibiotics will be effective prior to applying ophthalmic preparations.
Store at room temperature.
Caution(s): Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Warning(s): Not for use in animals which are raised for food production. Prolonged use in cats may produce blood dyscrasias.
Presentation: 1/8 oz. sterile, tamper-proof tubes.
