SAMe Liver Supplements for Dogs & Cats

Rating: based on 154 reviews

What is Denamarin?

Denamarin is a nutritional supplement from Nutramax Labs that's designed to help support liver health in dogs and cats. This product contains two active ingredients--SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine) and silybin--that work together to aid liver function.

The SAMe helps increase levels of glutathione in the liver, which is an antioxidant that's important for liver health. It also has been shown to help protect your pet's liver cells from cell death, and Denamarin may help support cell repair and regeneration. Silybin is a milk thistle extract that helps maintain a healthy oxidative balance and support liver function.

While it can sometimes be difficult to determine the exact cause behind compromised liver function, supporting your dog or cat's liver is important. Supplements like Denamarin may also be helpful for pets that take NSAIDs like Rimadyl or Deramaxx for long-term pain management.

Benefits

  • Protects liver cells from death and helps repair and regenerate cells
  • Available in standard tablets for cats and dogs and chewable tablets for dogs only
  • Works by increasing antioxidant levels
  • Causes no known side effects
  • Silybin improves digestion and the absorption of nutrients from food
  • Chewable tablets available in appealing liver flavor

Frequently Asked Questions about Denamarin

What is Denamarin and how does it work?

Denamarin is a liver health supplement for dogs and cats. It contains two active ingredients: S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silybin. They work together to support liver function, increase glutathione production, and help protect liver cells from cell death.

Which pets would benefit from Denamarin?

Pets who have compromised liver function or pets who are on NSAIDs for long-term joint pain management may benefit from supplementation with Denamarin. Talk to your veterinarian to see if they recommend starting your pet on a liver supplement.

Do I need a prescription for this?

No. Denamarin is an over-the-counter (OTC) nutritional supplement.

What are the side effects?

The manufacturer reports no known side effects.

What should I do if a side effect occurs?

Cease administering Denamarin and seek veterinary care.

Can Denamarin cause vomiting?

Although Nutramax reports no known side effects, it would be best to take your pet to their veterinarian if they vomit after taking Denamarin.

What are the differences between Denamarin, Denosyl, and Marin?

Marin and Denosyl are also manufactured by Nutramax. The former contains only silybin, while the latter contains only SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine). Denamarin has both those ingredients in one supplement.

What size should I buy?

Denamarin tablets are available in three sizes: for cats and small dogs up to 12 lbs., for medium dogs 13-34 lbs., and for large dogs weighing more than 35 lbs. The chewable tablets can be given to dogs of all sizes.

Do not give a dosage indicated for dogs only to cats.

Is there a liquid form?

No. Denamarin is only available as standardized tablets or chewable tablets.

My dog won't swallow the pills. What should I do?

You can try wrapping the tablets with food. Alternatively, VetDepot carries a variety of pill pockets to use with pets that don't like taking medications.

How long should you wait to feed your dog after giving Denamarin?

Nutramax recommends giving Denamarin at least 1 hour before feeding your pet.

Can I split the pills in half?

The regular stabilized tablets are specially coated so that they remain intact as they pass through the stomach. Splitting them in half or crushing them up will make them vulnerable to your pet's stomach acid. The chewable tablets can be split in half however.

Can I give this to myself?

Denamarin is for veterinary use only.

How is Denamarin different from the SAMe I can buy in stores?

The SAMe you can buy at the store is formulated for human consumption. The doses in those products are too high for animal use. Denamarin is specifically formulated for veterinary use.

Where is this manufactured?

Nutramax has two facilities in the US: Maryland and South Carolina.
