Dogs & Cats Heartworms Treatment Medication

Heartgard prevents heartworm infection and heartworm disease in dogs and cats by terminating heartworm larvae in the tissue stage. Heartgard Plus also treats and controls hookworms and roundworms. This product offers month-long protection for your pet.

Usage:

Heartgard for Dogs is safe for dogs and puppies over 6 weeks of age. Heartgard for Cats is safe for cats and kittens over 6 weeks of age. Use Heartgard Plus in dogs over 6 weeks of age only. Do not give to cats or other animals.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not allow children to handle Heartgard Plus. Read directions and precautionary statements before use.

Give as directed by your veterinarian.

Heartgard and Heartgard Plus are available in three different strengths for dosing: Blue for dogs weighing up to 25 lbs., Green for dogs weighing 26-50 lbs., and Brown for dogs weighing 51-100 lbs. Give dogs weighing more than 100 lbs. a combination of products as instructed by your veterinarian.

Heartgard for Cats is available in two different strengths: Red for cats 1-5 lbs. and Purple for cats weighing 5-15 lbs.

Directions:

1. Remove only 1 Heartgard Plus chewable of the appropriate dose from the foil-backed blister pack.
2. Return remaining product to its safe storage location.
3. Once a month, feed 1 chewable to your dog in a manner that encourages chewing. Heartgard Plus should not be swallowed in its entirety. If necessary, crumble chewable and hand-feed it to your dog or add it to food.
4. Observe administration to ensure the entire dose is consumed.
5. Give an additional full dose if the first is not completely consumed.

Frequency of Use:

Administer one dose of Heartgard Plus a month, on the same day each month. If you miss the dosage date, give the chewable to your dog as soon as you remember it. If the next dosage date is near, wait until then. Do not give a double dose of this medication.

If only using Heartgard Plus during mosquito season, the first dose should be given no more than one month after a dog's first exposure to mosquitoes and the final dose should be given no more than one month after a dog's last exposure to mosquitoes.

Storage:

Store Heartgard Plus in its foil-backed blister package. Keep out of reach of children and animals, as chewable medication is appealing to both.

Store this medication between 68 and 77 degrees F, protected from light.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Heartgard Plus contains two active ingredients: ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate. Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic compound that prevents heartworms. Pyrantel pamoate is an anthelminthic that prevents roundworm and hookworm infections.

Heartgard Plus comes in three dosages based on dog weight. Each strength comes in packages of 6 and 12 chewables (half-year and year's supply).

Active Ingredients:

Heartgard Plus Blue: 68 mcg ivermectin, 57 mcg pyrantel pamoate

Heartgard Plus Green: 136 mcg ivermectin, 114 mcg pyrantel pamoate

Heartgard Plus Brown: 272 mcg , 227 mcg pyrantel pamoate

Heartgard Blue: 68 mcg ivermectin

Heartgard Green: 136 mcg ivermectin

Heartgard Brown: 272 mcg ivermectin

Heartgard for Cats Red: 55 mcg ivermectin

Heartgard for Cats Purple: 165 mcg ivermectin

Warnings:

Keep this product out of reach of children and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.

Heartgard Plus is only for the prevention and control of heartworms, roundworms and hookworms in dogs 6 weeks of age and older.

Have your dog tested for existing heartworm infections prior to treatment with Heartgard Plus, as this medication is not effective against mature forms of the parasite.

Heartgard Plus should be chewed or broken up into small pieces, not swallowed whole.

Use as directed.

CAUTION: Side effects are rare with Heartgard Plus. Vomiting and diarrhea are most likely. Drooling, convulsions, loss of coordination, dilated pupils, weight loss, and death are even more uncommon side effects.

If you observe any side effects, or know of or suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian right away.

There are no known interactions with Heartgard Plus. However, consult your veterinarian before giving your dog other medications or supplements. Do not combine this medication with another for heartworms.

In the event of human ingestion, call your physician or a poison control center immediately for treatment instructions. Have the package in your possession when calling or seeking treatment.
