Advantage II Flea Control

Rating: based on 51 reviews

What is Advantage II?

Advantage II for Dogs & Cats is a topical flea preventative for dogs and cats where a single application lasts for an entire month. As soon as you apply it to your pet's skin, Advantage II goes to work. The first ingredient, imidacloprid, kills adult fleas within 12 hours of application, stops fleas from biting in 5 minutes, and reinfesting fleas (those that jump on your pet after Advantage II has been applied for 12 hours) are killed within 2 hours.

Advantage II kills more parasites than just adult fleas. The second ingredient in this product, insect growth regulator (IGR) pyriproxyfen, eliminates immature fleas (eggs and larvae). This breaks the flea's life cycle to prevent additional infestations. This is important because only 5% of a flea population found within a home are adult fleas. The eggs and larvae can remain undetected in your carpets, baseboards, pet bedding, and other areas until they develop. Advantage II helps end this cycle of infestation.

Because Advantage II flea control is waterproof, it remains effective even after swimming or bathing. It is safe for dogs and puppies 7 weeks and older and cats and kittens 8 weeks and older. Fleas are more than a nuisance; they can transmit diseases, cause allergic reactions, and make your pet miserable. Protect your pets with Advantage II today.

Note: Advantage II does not kill ticks. For canine tick control, consider using K9 Advantix II for Dogs from Bayer or collars like Preventic.

Benefits

  • Monthly spot on application to kill fleas
  • Prevents development of all stages of fleas, including eggs, larvae, pupae
  • Controls current infestations of fleas on cats and dogs
  • Prevents future flea infestations for 4 weeks
  • Kills eggs, larvae, and adult fleas in your pet's environment following contact with Advantage II
  • Kills on contact; doesn't require fleas to bite your pet
  • Prevents flea allergy dermatitis by protecting against flea bites
  • Protects dogs against lice infestations
  • Easy to use, waterproof, and fragrance-free

How it Works

Advantage II kills adult fleas through contact with the first active ingredient, imidacloprid. It causes paralysis and death in fleas by affecting the nervous system. The second ingredient, pyriproxyfen, is an insect growth regulator that prevents flea eggs from hatching. These two ingredients allow Advantage II to kill existing fleas on your pet and prevent additional infestations by ending the parasite's life cycle. Advantage II gathers in the oils of your pet's skin and hair and is slowly released for up to one month.

  • Advantage II Red is for large dogs weighing 21-55 lbs.

Advantage II for Cats & Kittens is available in three colors for cats of the following weight brackets:

  • Advantage II Turquoise is for kittens weighing 1-5 lbs.
  • Advantage II Orange is for small cats weighing 5-9 lbs.
  • Advantage II Purple is for large cats weighing over 9 lbs.

Applying Advantage II

  1. Remove one applicator tube from the Advantage II box.
  2. Hold applicator upright and pull the cap off.
  3. Turn the cap around and place the other end back on the applicator tube.
  4. Break the seal by twisting the cap. Then remove the cap from the applicator tube.
  5. Small & Medium Dogs (0-20 lbs.): Have your dog stand. Part the hair on their back between the shoulder blades. Place the tip of the applicator tube on their skin. Squeeze the tube and expel the entire contents directly onto your dog's skin. Make sure not to get Advantage II in your pet's eyes or mouth.

  6. Large and Extra Large Dogs (21 lbs. and over): Have your dog stand. Apply the contents of the entire Advantage II applicator tube evenly to three or four spots on your dog's back from their shoulders to the base of their tail. At each spot, make sure to apply the product directly onto your pet's skin. Do not apply an excess amount at any one spot as it could cause some of the Advantage II to run off the side of your dog. Make sure not to get this product in your pet's eyes or mouth.

  7. Cats: Part your cat's hair on the neck at the base of their skull. Place the tip of the applicator tube directly on your pet's skin and apply the entire contents to a single spot. Make sure not to get Advantage II Flea Control in your pet's eyes or mouth.

The manufacturer recommends you apply Advantage II once a month. It will remain effective even after bathing, swimming, or exposure to direct sunlight. In cases of severe flea infestations, you may have to retreat with Advantage II sooner than four weeks. Do not retreat more often than once every 7 days. Once the severe infestation is controlled, resume monthly applications.

Side Effects

Some animals may experience sensitivities to the ingredients in Advantage II, though this is rare. Some may experience temporary irritation at the site of application. If signs persist or become more severe in a few days after applying Advantage II, seek immediate veterinary care. If your pet has an unusual reaction, talk to your veterinarian before repeating treatment.

Cautions

Read the manufacturer's instructions and product label before use. Do not use a product labeled for dogs on cats or vice versa. Advantage II is harmful to humans if swallowed and can cause moderate eye irritation. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling this product.

Talk to your veterinarian before using Advantage II on your dog or cat if they are medicated, debilitated, pregnant, nursing, or aged. There may be unexpected interactions. If irritation at the site of application persists, seek veterinary care.

Storage

Do not use or store near heat or open flames. Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage and disposal. Keep unused Advantage II applicators in the original container only, and keep them out of reach of children and animals. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain.
