Prednisolone, like other corticosteroids, suppresses
the body's inflammatory response. It also functions as an immunosuppressant.
Prednisolone and Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension are not
approved by the FDA for use in animals; it is, however, common for veterinarians
to prescribe them.
Prednisolone Active Ingredient
(per tablet): prednisolone 5 mg
Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic
Suspension Ingredients (per mL): prednisolone acetate 1%, benzalkonium
chloride (preservative) 0.01%, hypromellose 2910, dibasic sodium phosphate,
wdetate disodium, polysorbate 80, glycerin, citric acid and/or sodium
hydroxide (to adjust pH), purified water
Warnings:
Keep Prednisolone out of reach of children and animals.
Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Prednisolone tablets are only intended for use in
cats and dogs. Do not use in other species. Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic
Suspension is only intended for use in dogs and horses. Not for use
on other species. These products are only for use on or in the animal
for which they were prescribed.
CAUTION: Close veterinary supervision
is recommended with internal corticosteroid use.
Do not use Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension
if it contains dirt or other debris or if it is discolored. Do not allow
the sterile tip of the Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension dropper
to come into contact with any surface.
Side effects of oral prednisolone may include fatigue,
insomnia, stomach upset, weight gain, increased hunger or thirst, increased
urinary output, panting, diarrhea, or vomiting. Cushing's syndrome
may result from prolonged or repeated therapy.
Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension may cause
blurry vision, stinging, redness, irritation, or sensitivity to light.
Rare but more serious side effects can include increased intraocular
pressure, cataracts, or corneal perforation.
Do not give oral prednisolone with serious bacterial,
viral, or fungal infections.
Do not use Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension
with infections unless they are being successfully managed with an appropriate
anti-infective agent.
Corticosteroids inhibit an animal's ability to
fight infections. Care should be taken during therapy to avoid sources
of infection.
Not for use in animals with Cushingoid syndrome,
peptic ulcers, or corneal ulcers.
Use with caution in animals with high blood pressure,
diabetes, hypothyroidism, congestive heart failure, or hepatic or renal
impairment. Tell your veterinarian if your animal has any medical conditions
or takes any drugs or supplements.
Prednisolone tablets may induce labor when given
during the final trimester of pregnancy.
Seek emergency veterinary treatment for a known or
suspected overdose. Overdose is unlikely when using Prednisolone Acetate
Ophthalmic Suspension.
Consult your veterinarian before concurrently administering
any other drugs or supplements with a product containing prednisolone.
Do not stop use of Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic
Suspension suddenly if it has been used for at least several weeks.
Reduce usage gradually.
Consult your veterinarian if an animal's condition
does not improve or gets worse.
