Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) Treatment

Marquis paste is an antiprotozoal medication used in the treatment of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) which is caused by Sarcocystis Neurona. Each oral medication syringe contains 127 grams of paste, while each gram of paste contains 150 mg of ponazuril.

Marquis Antiprotozoal Oral Paste is an anticoccidial medication indicated for the treatment of EPM, or equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. EPM is a progressive and degenerative disease that attacks the central nervous system in horses, resulting in severe disability and death. Marquis is able to treat the parasites responsible for EPM more quickly and affordably than other medications.

Benefits of Marquis:

  • First approved medication for the treatment of EPM
  • Easy to dose and administer
  • Generally well tolerated
  • Effective against the Sarcocystis parasites at several lifecycle stages
  • Crosses the blood/brain barrier to reach and kill the parasite
  • Works quickly to reduce treatment duration and potential for side effects
  • Readily accepted by most horses

Use this medication only as directed by your veterinarian.

The recommended dosage of Marquis is 2.27 mg per pound of body weight once each day for 28 days.

Assemble the paste syringe prior to administration.

Assembly Directions:

  1. Check that the plunger is clean and completely dry. Verify that the end cap is on the syringe barrel.
  2. Insert the plunger into the base of the syringe barrel. You will feel it snap into place.
  3. Remove the end cap and apply pressure to the plunger until you see paste at the tip of the barrel.
  4. Place the end cap back on the tip of the syringe.

Usage Directions:

  1. Remove the end cap from the syringe and apply pressure to the plunger until you see paste at the barrel's tip.
  2. Place the end cap back on the tip of the syringe.
  3. Check your horse's mouth to make certain it is clear of feed.
  4. Measure the correct dose based on your horse's weight by rotating the dosage ring on the plunger to the appropriate weight mark. The ring collar and barrel collar should be flush.
  5. Remove the end cap from the tip of the barrel.
  6. Introduce the tip of the syringe into the side of your horse's mouth, between the front and back teeth.
  7. Depress the plunger to deposit the correct amount of paste onto the top and back of your horse's tongue.
  8. Remove the syringe from your horse's mouth.
  9. Immediately raise your horse's head for several seconds. This will encourage swallowing of the paste.
  10. Wipe the tip of the syringe with a towel to clean it, and then return the end cap to the tip.
  11. Repeat these instructions each day for the prescribed treatment period.

Frequency of Use:

The usual duration of treatment is 28 days. Your veterinarian may prescribe treatment for a shorter or longer period, depending on the severity of your horse's illness and other factors.
