Seizure Medications for Dogs

K-BroVet is an anticonvulsant medication for controlling seizures in dogs. It is available in a highly palatable chewable tablet or oral liquid solution form. K-BroVet pet meds may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

K-BroVet treats seizures in dogs with its delivery of potassium bromide. It is available in an oral liquid solution and as chewable tablets, both of which are highly palatable and readily accepted by most dogs.

Benefits of K-BroVet:

  • Treats epileptic seizures with potassium bromide
  • Helps prevent injuries, loss of independence, and other problems associated with uncontrolled seizures
  • Great-tasting liver-flavored chewable tablets or butterscotch vanilla liquid solution
  • Scored tablets available in 250 mg and 500 mg strengths for easy dosing
  • Fortified with vitamin B12 for support of neurological functions
  • Safe for use with most other seizure treatments prescribed by your veterinarian

K-BroVet is only for dogs. Do not use in cats or other animals. Not for use in humans.

Do not permit children to administer this medication.

Read all instructions and warnings provided by the manufacturer prior to use.

The directions below represent a standard use. Follow your veterinarian's prescription.

Directions:

  1. Begin with an initial loading dose to achieve the recommended serum level. To achieve a serum level of 1 mg/mL, administer 54.5 mg per pound of body weight once daily for 5 days; to achieve a serum level of 1.5 mg/mL, administer 72.7 mg per pound of body weight one daily for 5 days.
  2. Reduce to a serum level maintenance dose. To maintain at 1 mg/mL, administer 13.6 mg per pound of body weight once daily; to maintain at 1.5 mg/mL, administer 18 mg per pound of body weight once daily.
  3. Provide plenty of fresh water for your dog during treatment.

Storage:

Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Store K-BroVet in its original container, tightly sealed, at room temperature.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

K-BroVet contains potassium bromide. This compound works at the cellular level to prevent seizures by depressing nerve activity and excitability. Its precise mechanism of action remains unknown.

K-BroVet Liquid Solution Ingredients (per mL): 250 mg potassium bromide, cyanocobalamin, pyridoxine HCl and butterscotch vanilla flavor

K-BroVet Chewable Tablets Ingredients (per tablet): 250 mg or 500 mg potassium bromide, cyanocobalamin and liver flavor

Warnings:

Keep this product out of reach of children and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.

K-BroVet is only intended for the control of seizures in dogs. Do not administer to cats or other animals. Do not use in humans.

Use exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian.

CAUTION: Not for use in animals with a hypersensitivity to bromide or other components of this medication. Seek emergency veterinary treatment of an allergic reaction.

The safety of this medication in pregnant, lactating, breeding, and young dogs has not been shown.

Use with caution in older animals. They are more susceptible to adverse reactions.

Tell your veterinarian about any adverse reactions you observe in your pet.

This medication may cause drowsiness, but the effect typically goes away within 3 weeks of administration.

Side effects may include changes in appetite, increased thirst, increased urinary output, constipation, vomiting, and loss of coordination. Nausea may be experienced following the initial load-in dose.

Pacing, increased attention seeking, irritability, aggression, and other personality changes may result from bromide therapy.

Treatment with bromide, when administered concurrently with Phenobarbital, increases the risk of pancreatitis.

A number of drugs and supplements, including vitamin supplements, can interact with K-BroVet. Make sure your veterinarian is aware of everything your dog takes. Consult your veterinarian before giving your pet any other medications or supplements during treatment.

Contact your veterinarian immediately in the event of an overdose. Short-term bromide toxicity is reversible, but even mild prolonged toxicity can progress to more serious nervous system dysfunction. The concurrent use of Phenobarbital lowers the dose necessary for toxicity. Excessive salivation, skin lesions, diarrhea, ataxia, hematochezia, shivering, and stupor progressing to coma or death are clinical signs of toxicity.
