DMSO is primarily used as a liniment for horses.
It may be used on other animals. It functions as a solvent, carrying
other medications and ingredients across the skin barrier. It may help
improve symptoms of arthritis and is sometimes used to treat increased
intracranial pressure and/or cerebral edema.
DMSO is available over the counter.

CAUTION: Use extreme caution when mixing
with substances or medications. DMSO significantly increases absorption,
making overdose and adverse effects more likely.
May cause significant skin irritation.
Avoid contact with clothing, skin, eyes, and mucus
membranes. Wash hands well after handling. In case of eye contact, flush
eyes with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
Do not use this medication in animals with a known
allergy to it or to similar medications.
Do not use DMSO on pregnant or lactating animals.
Check liver and kidney function regularly in animals
undergoing treatment with DMSO.
Some dogs may experience a change in the ocular lens
leading to altered refractive index and lenticular opacities.
