Furosemide, the active ingredient in
Salix, is a chemically distinct diuretic and saluretic. It obstructs
fluid and salt absorption in the kidney tubules, triggering increased
urination for excretion of excess fluids and salt. Common usage is in
cats, dogs, and horses. In cattle, Salix is used to treat physiological
parturient edema of the mammary gland and related structures.
