Vanguard Dog Vaccinations

Vanguard is a line of vaccines for dogs. The vaccines are used to prevent diseases associated with particular common viral (and sometimes bacterial) infections. Several provide protection against canine distemper, canine infectious hepatitis and respiratory diseases caused by the canine adenovirus type 1 and type 2 respectively, and canine parainfluenza. Others offer protection against types of enteritis, sometimes in addition to the above-named.

Vanguard vaccines protect dogs against a variety of illnesses caused by viral and sometimes bacterial infections. All listed vaccines are safe for use in healthy dogs and puppies as young as 6 weeks of age.

  1. Vaccinate only healthy dogs and puppies of at least 6 weeks of age.
  2. Aseptically reconstitute the freeze-dried vaccine with the accompanying sterile diluent, gel, or liquid vaccine. Shake well.
  3. Use vaccine right away following rehydration. Do not store reconstituted vaccine.
  4. Administer 1 mL subcutaneously or intramuscularly, except for Vanguard DA2MP, which is only for intramuscular injection.

Frequency of Use:

Give 3 doses of Vanguard Plus 5, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 2 doses of Vanguard Plus 5/L4, with the second 2 weeks later. Puppies vaccinated before 9 weeks of age should receive 3 doses, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 3 doses of Vanguard Plus 5/CV, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 2 doses of Vanguard Plus 5/L4-CV, with the second 2 weeks later, followed by a single dose of Vanguard Plus CV 3 weeks after the second administration. Puppies vaccinated before 9 weeks of age should receive 3 doses of the combination vaccine, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 3 doses of Vanguard Plus CPV, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 3 doses of Vanguard Plus CPV/CV, each 3 weeks apart.

Give 1 dose of Vanguard DA2MP at 6 to 12 weeks of age. Dogs should receive a subsequent vaccination against canine distemper, adenovirus, and parainfluenza at 14-16 weeks of age.

Annual revaccination (or on a schedule determined by your veterinarian) is recommended for all listed Vanguard vaccines.


Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Refrigerate Vanguard vaccines between 35 and 45 degrees F. Protect from higher temperatures, direct sunlight, and freezing.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Vanguard Plus 5, Vanguard Plus 5/L4, Vanguard Plus 5/CV, Vanguard Plus 5/L4-CV, and Vanguard Plus CPV/CV contain gentamicin as a preservative. Vanguard Plus CPV contains gentamicin and amphotericin as preservatives. Vanguard DA2MP contains penicillin and streptomycin as preservatives.


Keep Vanguard vaccines out of reach of children and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.

Vanguard vaccines are only intended for use in healthy dogs and puppies of at least 6 weeks of age. Do not administer to other animals. Not for use in humans.

In most instances, for subcutaneous or intramuscular injection only. Vanguard DA2MP is for intramuscular injection only. Do not administer via any other route.

CAUTION: Vaccinations should be made with sterile equipment. Do not sterilize with chemicals, as they may inactivate a vaccine.

Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 45 degrees F or direct sunlight can negatively affect the potency of Vanguard vaccines.

Use vaccine immediately upon rehydration.

Incinerate containers and any unused product.

Vanguard vaccines are not for use in pregnant bitches.

Vaccines may cause an anaphylactic reaction. Epinephrine and subsequent appropriate supportive therapies are recommended.

Vanguard vaccines are effective when administered to healthy animals. Dogs incubating a disease, hosting internal parasites, that are stressed or malnourished, or that otherwise have immune system impairment, may not properly develop immunity.
