I switched from topical to pills for my 3 1/2 year-old smooth hair mini dachshund. He was constantly reacting to the topical meds (flaky skin, scratching the area it was applied, running away from us when it was time for the monthly treatment), so on the vet's advice, I switched to the pills. He has now taken his third pill with no problems. No scratching, no flaky skin, and happily takes the pill. I was told to watch for vomiting--it didn't happen. I do notice he doesn't want to eat during the day he takes the pill, but does finally eat at night. He's a smooth hair mini, so things on him (like fleas and ticks) are easy to see, but I've seen nothing so far. I have 3 more pills and will definitely renew my script for another 6 months. Just wish they would drop the price a bit. This pill is a lot easier for the both of us.
