Esbilac Powder and Esbilac Liquid provide essential
nutrients to puppies without access to their mother's milk. These
milk replacement products also supply supplemental nutrients for growing
puppies, pregnant and nursing bitches, or dogs that are stressed, convalescing,
aging, or otherwise in need of increased nutrient intake. Esbilac 2nd
Step provides essential nutrients in a creamy cereal that serves as
a transitional food between a mother's milk or Esbilac Powder or Liquid
and a diet consisting of solid foods. Esbilac also manufactures the
Esbilac Emergency Feeding Kit, which contains the powdered milk replacement
and all the equipment needed to feed an orphaned or rejected puppy.

to use of any Esbilac product.
The Esbilac Emergency Feeding Kit contains Esbilac
Powder. It is used as described in the directions for Esbilac Powder
below. It is a ¾-oz packet that reconstitutes to 5 oz of liquid.
The following directions represent a standard usage.
However, the nutritional and feeding needs of puppies and dogs vary
by the individual. Consult your veterinarian for advice on appropriate
feeding practices for your pet(s). Follow your veterinarian's recommendations
for use of any Esbilac product.
Esbilac Powder and Liquid Directions:
- Gently stir or shake 1 part Esbilac Powder (if using)
into 2 parts warm water. Mix until all powder is dissolved. Do not use
a blender. Make only as much as your puppy can consume within 24 hours.
- Shake Esbilac Liquid well (if using) prior to opening
- Warm product to room temperature by placing the filled
nurser in a pan of tepid water. Test the temperature on your wrist before
- Feed puppies at least 2 tbsp. (30 mL) per 4 oz. of
body weight daily. Divide the day's total quantity evenly among all the day's feedings.
- When puppies are old enough to lap, transition from
a nurser to a shallow bowl.
- For supplemental use of Esbilac Powder in pregnant
or lactating bitches, add 2 tsp. per every 5 lbs. of body weight
to the day's rations. For other supplemental use, add 1 tsp.
per every 5 lbs. of body weight to the day's rations.
- For supplemental use of Esbilac Liquid, add 2 tbsp.
per every 5 lbs. of body weight to the day's rations.
- Refrigerate unused product.
Esbilac 2nd Step Directions:
- At 4 to 5 weeks of age, when puppies are on their
feet and lapping from a bowl, begin feeding Esbilac 2nd Step. Serve in a shallow bowl; do not feed from
- Mix product with Esbilac Liquid, reconstituted Esbilac
Powder, or water. In the beginning, use more liquid to keep the results
like a thin gruel. Begin at a ratio of 1 part Esbilac 2nd Step powder to 3 parts Esbilac liquid or water.
- Start by offering small amounts 3 times per day,
and dispose of unconsumed product after 20 minutes.
- Gradually increase the ratio of Esbilac 2nd Step powder to liquid to add bulk to the meal according
to the label's feeding guidelines. Results should eventually have
an oatmeal-like consistency.
- Transition to solid foods by 7 to 8 weeks of age.
Frequency of Use:
Typically, small or weak puppies should be fed every
3 to 4 hours. Others should be fed every 8 hours. Ask your veterinarian
about an appropriate feeding schedule for your pet(s).
Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Store unopened Esbilac Powder and the Esbilac Emergency
Feeding Kit in a cool, dry location. Protect from moisture and heat.
Refrigerate powder once opened for up to 3 months or freeze for up to
6 months. Store reconstituted Esbilac in the refrigerator and use or
dispose of it within 24 hours.
Store unopened Esbilac Liquid at controlled room
temperature. Protect from heat. Refrigerate opened liquid for up to
3 days or freeze. Do not freeze in its original container.
Store Esbilac 2nd Step in its original
container, tightly sealed, in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture
and heat. Do not keep reconstituted product; dispose of after 20 minutes.
It is a violation of Federal
Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.
Keep Esbilac products out of reach of children and
animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Esbilac products are only intended for use in puppies
and dogs. Do not feed to other species. Not for human consumption.
CAUTION: Follow label storage instructions.
The feeding needs of individual puppies vary. Ask
your veterinarian about when and how much to feed your pet(s).
Always administer Esbilac products from clean nursers
or bowls. Wash feeding equipment with soap and water after each use.
If your pet develops diarrhea, watery stool, or constipation
during use of Esbilac, talk to your veterinarian.
