Vetoryl For Dogs

Trilostane Canine Cushing's Disease Medications

Vetoryl is an oral adrenocortical suppressant for canine Cushing's Disease. Vetoryl pet meds contain trilostane which treats hyperadrenocorticism caused by an adrenocortical tumor in dogs and pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Vetoryl is available in three strengths 10 mg, 30 mg, and 60 mg in quantities of 30 capsules.

Vetoryl helps control symptoms of Cushing's Disease within several weeks of treatment. Untreated, Cushing's Disease can cause many symptoms, depending on the organs affected. Most commonly, the disease causes hair loss, increased appetite, a pot-bellied appearance, increased thirst and urination, thinning skin, fragile blood vessels, weakness, panting, abnormal walking, blood clots, and breathing problems. Cushing's Disease is caused by the overproduction of cortisol, an adrenal hormone.

Benefits of Vetoryl:

  • Effective treatment for the symptoms of Cushing's Disease in dogs
  • Causes fewer and less severe side effects than Mitotane
  • Effective for both adrenal-dependent and pituitary-dependent cases of Cushing's Disease
  • Helps control excess cortisol production
  • Improvement seen in as little as several weeks

Vetoryl (Trilostane)

Trilostane, the active ingredient in Vetoryl, inhibits the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone to block the production of glucocorticoids, sex hormones, and mineralocorticoids while steroid precursor levels increase.

Active ingredients: Trilostane

Warnings:

Keep this product out of reach of children and animals.

Vetoryl is intended for use in dogs only.

CAUTION: Do not give Vetoryl to dogs that have shown a hypersensitivity to trilostane. Do not use this medication in animals with renal insufficiency or primary hepatic disease.

This medication is not for use in pregnant dogs. Studies in laboratory animals show a risk of teratogenic effects and pregnancy loss.

Vetoryl may cause hypoadrenocorticism at any dose. It may take several months for adrenal function to return to normal. Some dogs may never regain proper adrenal function.

A small number of dogs may develop a condition called corticosteroid withdrawal syndrome within 10 days of beginning treatment with Vetoryl. Signs of this syndrome include lethargy, anorexia, weakness, and weight loss. Seek veterinary attention if these signs develop.

It is not know if Vetoryl is safe for use in lactating dogs or in males intended for breeding.

Adverse reactions may include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, lethargy, weakness, depression, hemorrhagic diarrhea, hypoadrenocortical crisis, adrenal necrosis/rupture, collapse, and death. Immediately contact your veterinarian at the first sign of intolerance.

For a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), or to report adverse reactions, call Dechra Veterinary Products at (866) 933-2472.

Treat overdose with corticosteroids, mineralocorticoids, and intravenous fluids.

Use ACE inhibitors cautiously in animals being treated with Vetoryl. Both medications lower aldosterone, potentially impairing the dog's ability to maintain normal levels of electrolytes, blood volume, and renal perfusion. Do not use Vetoryl with potassium sparing diuretics. Doing so increases the risk of hyperkalemia.

If Swallowed: Seek medical attention immediately and bring the product label and container with you when doing so.

If on Skin: Wash hands thoroughly using soap and clean water. This medication is associated with early pregnancy loss and teratogenic effects and should not be handled by pregnant persons or those trying to conceive.
