Steroid Pet Medications for Ear Infections

Synotic is a corticosteroid-based otic solution for the relief of inflammation and pruritus (itching) associated with ear infections. It is specially formulated to provide rapid and lasting relief and to promote the healing of underlying infections with antimicrobial and drying effects.

Synotic remedies inflammation and itching associated with ear infections in dogs. It is highly effective and fast acting, and it penetrates well into the ear canal. Synotic also has light antimicrobial action and dries the environment to make it less hospitable to bacteria and fungus.

Benefits of Synotic:

  • Treats symptoms of an ear infection
  • Reduces inflammation and soothes itching
  • Penetrating solution that is rapidly absorbed for fast relief
  • Makes your dog more comfortable
  • Helps reduce scratching that can cause irritation and secondary infections
  • Provides antimicrobial effects and dries the ear canal to help treat ear infections
  • Easily administered ear drops
  • Not generally associated with side effects
  • Low-cost product

Read all instructions and precautionary statements provided by the manufacturer before use.

Use exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian.

Directions:

  1. Clean the ears of any wax, crust, dirt, debris, or foreign matter. Dry the ear canal thoroughly.
  2. Instill 4 to 6 drops in each ear twice daily.
  3. Gently massage the base of the ear to promote distribution of the medication.
  4. Take care to prevent contact with the dog's eyes and wear gloves to protect your own skin during application.

Frequency of Use:

Typical usage is 2 times per day.

Do not apply Synotic for more than 14 days. The total dose should not exceed 17 mL.

Give a missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the subsequent dose, wait and resume the normal schedule then. Do not give a double dose of Synotic.

Storage:

Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Store Synotic at room temperature. Protect from light.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Fluocinolone acetonide, one of the active ingredients in Synotic, is a corticosteroid that suppresses the body's inflammatory response. It is coupled with dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO. This compound is a synergist that increases the absorption rate of the flucinolone. Synotic's propylene glycol and citric acid base provides some antimicrobial action and drying effect while penetrating into the ear canal and evaporating slowly for long-lasting relief.

Synotic Ingredients (per mL): fluocinolone acetonide 0.01% and dimethyl sulfoxide 60% in propylene glycol and citric acid

Warnings:

Keep Synotic out of reach of children and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.

Synotic is only intended for use on dogs. Do not use on other species. Do not use Synotic on any dog for which it was not prescribed. Not for human use.

For topical otic use only. Do not administer via any other route.

CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Wear gloves during use. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Avoid contact with treated areas until the application is completely dry.

Not for use in any ear with a ruptured eardrum.

Not for use on any animal with a hypersensitivity to its ingredients. Seek emergency veterinary treatment for an allergic reaction.

Due to the high absorption rate of the fluocinolone content of Synotic, this product is contraindicated in any instance where systemic use of corticosteroids is contraindicated.

Prevent contact with the dog's eyes.

Synotic should not be used to treat an infection, but only to relieve associated symptoms. An infection requires appropriate therapy as recommended by your veterinarian.

Do not apply Synotic to a pregnant bitch unless your veterinarian advises that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Do not give higher doses than prescribed or for a longer period than prescribed.

This product may interact with other drugs and supplements. DMSO can increase the absorption rate of other topical products and the effects of systemic products. Ask your veterinarian before concurrently using any other medication or supplement.

Synotic may cause a brief warm and/or stinging sensation upon application, especially with the presence of open skin.

Topical corticosteroid use in not generally associated with side effects. However, individual sensitivities may occur. Mention any adverse reactions to your veterinarian.

The absorption of DMSO may cause a garlic- or oyster-like odor on the breath.

Decreased adrenal function, increased susceptibility to infection, and weight loss may result from use, especially with overdose.

Increased thirst or urination, diarrhea, emesis, weight loss, panting, or behavioral changes may indicate an overdose. Overdose is associated with high doses and with prolonged use. If you know of or suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Synotic has the potential to damage fabrics, plastics, and other materials. Use with care.
