Medication for Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Reconcile (Fluoxetine) chewable tablets are used to treat separation anxiety in dogs. This medication is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that reduces the frequency and severity of anxiety symptoms, thereby improving the effectiveness of behavior modification plans. Reconcile pet meds should always be used in conjunction with behavior modification. Available in four strengths: 8 mg, 16 mg, 32 mg, and 64 mg.

Reconcile is a prescription medication that helps alleviate the symptoms of canine separation anxiety when used in conjunction with behavior modification.

The recommended dose of Reconcile is 1-2 mg/kg of body weight, given once daily. Follow your veterinarian's dosing instructions.

Directions:

  1. Offer Reconcile to dogs with or without food.
  2. Give one 8 mg tablet to dogs weighing 8.8 to 17.6 lbs.
  3. Give one 16 mg tablet to dogs weighing 17.7 to 35.2 lbs.
  4. Give one 32 mg tablet to dogs weighing 35.3 to 70.4 lbs.
  5. Give one 64 mg tablet to dogs weighing 70.5 to 140.8 lbs.
  6. If a dose is missed, wait until the next scheduled dose. Do not double up on doses or increases the dosage amount.

Frequency of Use:

Administer Reconcile once daily for 8 weeks, or as instructed by your veterinarian. The effectiveness and safety of using Reconcile longer than 8 weeks is not known.

Storage:

Store between 66 and 77 degrees F. Leave desiccant inside the bottle, and completely close the bottle between doses.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

The active ingredient in Reconcile, fluoxetine hydrochloride, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI. This medication works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, at the pre-synaptic neuron. Fluoxetine does not work by sedation.

Warnings:

Keep this product out of reach of children and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.

Not for use in humans.

Reconcile is contraindicated for use in dogs with a history of seizures or epilepsy. Do not give this medication to dogs taking medications that lower the seizure threshold.

Reconcile is intended for dogs age 6 months and older that weigh a minimum of 8.8 lbs. Not for use in cats or other animals.

CAUTION: Do not use Reconcile in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitor medications. Wait a minimum of 14 days after stopping MAOI therapy before starting treatment with Reconcile. Wait 6 weeks after stopping Reconcile before starting treatment with any medication that may interact with norfluoxetine or fluoxetine.

Do not give this medication to dogs with a known sensitivity to fluoxetine HCl or any other SSRI drug.

It is not know what effects Reconcile has on pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs. Do not give this medication to puppies less than 6 months old.

It is not know what adverse effects may result in dogs taking Reconcile and medications that affect the cytochrome P450 enzyme system.

Seek veterinary attention immediately for known or suspected overdose.

Adverse effects include possible seizures and weight loss. Other adverse effects may include lethargy, depression, vomiting, restlessness, diarrhea, aggression, shaking, appetite loss, whining, and other side effects.

Inform your veterinarian if your dog is currently using Anipryl, Mitaban Dip, or a Preventic Collar. Tell your veterinarian of any other medications your pet is taking or has recently taken.
