Increase in Chronic Diseases

A 2012 study conducted by Banfield Pet Hospital revealed a dramatic increase in pets suffering from chronic diseases. Chronic disease includes conditions such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and thyroid disease.

One of the most dramatic increases uncovered by the study was the increase of obesity rates in dogs and cats from 2007 to 2011. The number of dogs that are either overweight or obese increased by 37%, while the number of obese or overweight cats increased by a staggering 90%. These statistics are of particular concern to pet owners because obesity is associated with many serious chronic conditions.
