Antihistamines for Pets

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine pet medication used to treat allergic reactions and asthma in cats and dogs. Cyproheptadine is also sometimes used as an appetite stimulant in cats.

Cyproheptadine benefits pets by stimulating appetite, treating allergies and feline asthma, and relieving itching. It may also be of benefit to animals with Cushing's disease and is sometimes used to treat serotonin syndrome in animals.

Benefits of Cyproheptadine:

  • Stimulates appetite in anorexic and ill cats
  • Controls symptoms of allergies
  • Reduces itching and inflammation
  • Helps treats feline asthma
  • May help inappropriate urine-spraying behavior
  • Works rapidly to improve allergic symptoms

Use this medication only as directed by your veterinarian.

Do not exceed recommended dosage.

Directions:

  1. Give 0.15 to 1 mg per pound of body weight twice daily to dogs to treat allergies.
  2. Give 2 mg to cats twice daily to treat allergies.
  3. Give 1 to 4 mg to cats once or twice daily to stimulate the appetite.

Frequency of Use:

Duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated and the animal's individual response. Complete all medication prescribed by your veterinarian. Failure to give the entire course of medication may result in a relapse.

Storage:

Store Cyproheptadine at room temperature, in the original container, tightly sealed. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that binds to specific histamine receptors in the body to reduce inflammation and stop allergic reactions. Additionally, Cyproheptadine antagonizes serotonin in the brain. This effect on serotonin, a neurotransmitter, increases appetite to improve feeding and weight gain. The medication also stimulates cortisone production and may be of benefit to pets with Cushing's disease.
