million doses of Advantage® have been dispensed since 1996.
Advantage stops fleas from biting in three to five minutes, and
starts killing fleas within an hour. Within 12 hours of initial
application, 98 to100% of all existing fleas on pets are dead.
Advantage kills fleas even after shampooing, swimming or exposure to
rain or sunlight. Advantage provides constant protection for up to four
weeks. Starting a regular flea control schedule before the beginning of
the flea season and throughout the year allows your cat or dog to be
healthy for the entire year. Protecting your pet throughout the year
may also lower the risk of being affected by conditions such as flea
allergy dermatitis.
The active
ingredient is Advantage is imidacloprid which is a chloronicontinyl
nitroguanidine inceticidal agent. Imidacloprid's mechanism of action as
an incecticide is to act on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the
postsynapic membrane causing CNS impairment and death. Advantage is
applied to the back of your pet's neck with pre-measured applicator
tube. When applied topically, the compound is not absorbed into the
bloodstream or internal organs.
